It's not just yours. Sensitive skin is incredibly common in tweens and teens—and it's becoming more common. When we worked with our Founding 50 (the real teens who helped build Prereq), we found that a significant number dealt with sensitivity, irritation, or reactions to products that were supposedly "gentle."

That's exactly why getting the National Eczema Association seal for Deo Multi-Mist was so important to us. Young skin is still developing. It deserves products formulated with that in mind, not adult products repackaged with colorful labels.

Here's a reframe that might help: this generation is aware. They're asking about self-care, they're interested in taking care of themselves, and that's actually a good thing. The issue isn't that they want products—it's that most products available to them aren't designed for them.

The conversation isn't about saying "no" to self-care. It's about helping them understand the difference between what they want (often driven by TikTok and influencers using adult products) and what their skin actually needs right now.

Young skin doesn't need anti-aging. It doesn't need harsh actives. It doesn't need a 10-step routine. It needs protection, hydration, and gentle care. Starting with the right foundation now—literally and figuratively—sets them up for healthier skin (and a healthier relationship with self-care) later.

This is a big one, and we hear it constantly. The pull toward makeup (especially mascara, lip gloss, and anything "aesthetic") is real and starts younger than it used to.

A few thoughts: First, the desire for self-expression is normal and healthy. Second, the products they're often reaching for (adult mascaras, heavily fragranced products, drugstore finds with questionable ingredient lists) aren't formulated for young, sensitive skin, especially around eyes and lips.

Rather than a hard "no," consider redirecting toward age-appropriate options: a tinted lip balm instead of heavy gloss, clear brow gel instead of mascara, skincare that makes them feel like they have a "routine" without the harsh stuff. Meeting them where they are—while protecting what needs protecting—tends to work better than outright bans.

We're building Prereq to be that safe outlet. Lip care is on our roadmap for exactly this reason.

Because fragrance sells. That "signature scent" creates brand recognition and emotional connection. But fragrance is also one of the most common causes of skin irritation and allergic reactions—especially in young, sensitive skin.

"Fragrance" on an ingredient list can actually represent dozens of undisclosed chemicals. Some are fine. Some aren't. You can't tell from the label.

Prereq uses only naturally-derived scents from actual plant extracts (like vanilla and coconut in Deo Multi-Mist)—not synthetic fragrance blends. The result is a subtle, pleasant smell without the overwhelming "your car stinks for three days" effect you get from some heavily-scented products.

Trust your instinct that it's confusing—it genuinely is. "Clean beauty" has no legal definition. Brands can claim almost anything. And the internet is full of fear-mongering and misinformation in both directions.

Here's our filter: Look for specifics, not vibes. "Gentle" and "natural" mean nothing legally. But "EWG Score of 1 on every ingredient," "dermatologist-tested," "National Eczema Association approved," and "100% hormone-disruptor-free" are specific, verifiable claims.

We built Prereq to take the guesswork out of this for you. Every ingredient, every formula, every claim is something we can back up. You shouldn't need a chemistry degree to feel confident about what goes on your kid's skin.

Great question, and the answer is: a lot.

Sephora Clean: No parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and about 50 other restricted ingredients. It's a start.

Ulta Clean/Target Clean: Similar but slightly different restricted lists. Each retailer sets their own standards.

Credo Clean: One of the strictest standards in the industry. Over 2,700 restricted ingredients, plus requirements around sustainability and ethical sourcing.

EWG Verified: Products where every ingredient scores in the safest range on the Environmental Working Group database.

Prereq holds ourselves to Credo-level standards AND requires every ingredient to be EWG Score of 1. We're not just "clean enough to qualify"—we're as safe as we could possibly make it.
